Now that school has started again, it is a good time to familiarize yourself with what the laws are when you are following a school bus. This should also be applied for any school bus you may meet that is in a nearby lane when driving. Knowing how you should drive and how to react to a school bus is important. If you plan on traveling to other states, make sure to look up what there laws are as well. This will help keep the school kids safe, as well you and your passengers.

When the Bus Stops

If a school bus is stopped on the road, make sure to slow down immediately. You will want to see if the stop signal arm is extended out and if there are flashing red lights. When you are approaching the bus, you should make sure to stop at least 20 feet away from it. When you notice that the stop signal arm is out, make sure your vehicle is completely stopped and you are not moving. Once the signal arm is retracted and the lights do not flash any longer, then you can move. When the signal arm is in, that means that it will be safe to drive around or pass it. It can also mean the bus will start moving again.

Also remember to follow the laws if you are driving and meeting the bus from the other direction. If a child is crossing the street, then you will need to stop as well. It is always good to always be on alert and aware of your surroundings, especially during the time of school pick up. Even if you drive by a school area or school zone, make sure you pay attention to driving and look for any kids that might be there.
